The AMAZING Benefits of Lard + Tallow for Skin Care

For many years, I've been on the search for a cream that I could genuinely adore. As a woman in my mid 40s, I'm always seeking something ideal for my face and body that effectively hydrates my dry skin. Something that isn't overly greasy for my skin, provides a nice glow, helps with occasional blemish, offers anti-aging benefits as wrinkles are becoming a concern, and is both an affordable + sustainable choice.

After years of searching, I hadn't truly fallen in love with any cream or beauty products. Given my list of must-haves, I knew it would be impossible. But, then it happened. I found my miracle product; I discovered lard + tallow, and now I'm genuinely excited about my skincare routine. I finally feel like my skin is HEALTHY and I'm pleased with what I'm using to moisturize my face, lips, and body. You might be thinking, did she really just say she uses lard + tallow?

When looking for the perfect skincare product, lard and tallow likely never crossed your mind. It certainly didn't for me initially. Truthfully, the thought of using pig or beef fat on my body and face was unappealing until I conducted some research. Now, I can't envision using anything else.

What makes lard + tallow such a great option? There are truly countless benefits.

Lard: Deeply hydrating, anti-inflammatory properties and enhanced skin regeneration due to its high compatibility with human sebum. Lard has a similar pH and lipid profile to human skin, allowing it to be absorbed quickly without feeling greasy. Rich in vitamins A, D, E, and omega-3 fatty acids which promote collagen production, improve elasticity and reduce fine lines.

It helps repair the skin barrier, reduces acne, softness skin and treats conditions like eczema or rosacea. It is rich in oleic acid, which helps repair dry, cracked skin and locks in moisture. It acts as a non-toxic alternative to synthetic lotions, often used in balms and soaps that are found in department stores labels as all-natural. Lard also works as an emollient to smooth skin texture and protect against environmental damage.

Tallow: Beef tallow, is pure animal fat that surrounds the kidneys and other organs of a cow. It is a nutrient-dense, traditional skincare ingredient rich in fatty acids and vitamins A, B12, D, E, and K that closely match human skin sebum, (similar to Lard) locking in moisture and smoothing rough patches.

Perfect at supporting skin health and acts as antioxidants. It is often used to soothe conditions like eczema, psoriasis and wind-chapped skin. It acts as a powerful emollient to intensely moisture, protect, and soothe dry, irritated skin. Because it closely mimics human sebum, it absorbs easily, repairing the skin barrier without sitting on the surface. Rich in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), it can help improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

At Apotheroots, we naturally test all our products before offering them to you. I adore our balms and lip products that include these delightful fats. If you've seen my skin, you wouldn't guess I'm in my 40s. I've always been diligent about skincare, thanks to my late grandmother Jane, who emphasized its importance. Because of her, I've always been mindful of the products I use on my skin.

I also want to stress the importance of conducting your own research regarding skincare products. This blog aims to educate you on the benefits of Lard/Tallow and why they might be beneficial for you, as they have been for me. I take great pride in offering you apothecary rooted in nature. A gentle yet powerful approach to holistic living for your skin, mind, and spirit.

Important Considerations:

Quality Matters: Benefits are maximized using high-quality, rendered lard/tallow from pasture-raised animals. You'll want to make sure you're buying from a source thats from a farm that is ethnical in how they raise and process their animals. (I buy from a reputable farm thats been in business for over 30 years)

Comedogenic Risk: Due to its high oleic acid content, it might be too heavy or potentially clog pores for some individuals, especially those with highly acne-prone skin. However, it's worth trying to observe how your skin reacts. An effective skincare routine should also include a quality cleanser, toner, and serum (which we are also developing behind the scenes).

Scent: Unrefined lard may have a slight pork odor; rendered lard is generally preferred for skincare, as it is practically scentless.

Disclaimer: Tallow/Lard are not a substitute for medically prescribed treatments for chronic skin conditions. If you're considering using lard/tallow as part of your skin care routine, talk with your dermatologist first to see if you can safely incorporate it or if there are other options that are more helpful.
